The Lawn Cemetery
Chorleywood Lawn Cemetery is situated on the Rickmansworth Road alongside the Parish Office at South Lodge. Inaugurated shortly after World War II by Chorleywood Urban District Council and at the time it was regarded as a very advanced idea, combining large areas of well cut grass with flowers, ornamental hedges and trees.
The Lawn Cemetery has been tended with care ever since and is possibly one of the most beautiful last resting places in Hertfordshire. The Bishop of St Albans consecrated an attractive extension in 1996 which virtually doubled the size of the original area. Many seats have been donated for visitors who can enjoy this peaceful green oasis far from the noisy world outside.
Burials can take place between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The Site has both consecrated and unconsecrated ground and is divided into Sections A to G as shown below:
- Sections A & B: Now full. Only used when re-opening plots.
- Sections C: Unconsecrated ground - both ashes and burial plots available
- Sections D: Consecrated ground - burial plots available
- Section E: Consecrated ground - Ashes and Infants
- Sections F & G: Maintained and kept for long term future use
Contact is made with the Lawn Cemetery Administration through local undertakers who will be receptive to your needs and inform the Parish Office accordingly.When an interment has taken place, the Next of Kin will be sent the Deed and Cemetery Rules, and be informed of the procedure for ordering a bronze plaque for the grave.
The Lawn Cemetery is maintained by the Parish Council whose staff need access at all times for grass cutting, rose pruning and other maintenance tasks.
In order to keep the open aspect of the cemetery, only two green vases per grave are permitted. The vases can be obtained from the Parish Office. Please contact Mrs Maura Martin, Lawn Cemetery Administrator at the Parish Office for further information.
