NEW FLOCK ON THE BLOCK AT CHORLEYWOOD HOUSE ESTATE!

Countryside Management Service (CMS) and landowners, Three Rivers District Council, have been working closely together to maintain two important Wildlife Sites at Chorleywood House Estate Local Nature Reserve.

‘Chorleywood Dell’ and ‘Dell Field’ are located in the centre of the 160 acre estate and consist mainly of flower rich meadows and some scrub and trees.

Sheep have been grazing Chorleywood Dell and Dell Field for about 6 weeks a year for over 7 years. This year sees a flock of Jacob and Hebridean sheep coming to the estate from the end of July to the beginning of September. Sheep grazing will bring benefits for wildlife by stopping scrub and trees from invading grassland habitats and to help with the development of a variety of vegetation heights and species.

Local people have been recruited as volunteer ‘watchers’ who will keep a regular eye on the sheep on behalf of the grazier and site owner, TRDC. They will receive training in their duties before the sheep arrive, from the sheep owner.

Chorleywood House Estate is a Public Open Space which is widely used by the public and is set in the very south-eastern corner of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); the whole of the estate is in a Countryside Stewardship Scheme agreement devised by the CMS. Chorleywood Dell and Dell Field will remain open to visitors during this time and the CMS hope that people will enjoy seeing these native breeds of sheep on the estate. The Country Code advises that dogs should be on a lead when near to livestock.
