Gareth's Report - Spring 2010

Dear Chorleywood Residents,

I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year and that you’ve been sticking to your resolutions made.

The days are still short so please do everything possible to keep your home secure. As mentioned previously, consider installing security alarms and “dusk to dawn” security; Secure your rear garden – lock your shed, keep gates secured, keep fences maintained and don’t leave anything like tools or ladders lying around which can be used by burglars; Use timer switches on lamps to give the impression somebody is at home; Always keep valuables and keys out of sight when you are not at home. For more detailed Crime Prevention advice please visit our website www.herts.police.uk.

Tania and I are attempting to meet and greet as many residents as we can over the coming months. This entails knocking on your door to say hello and introduce ourselves, over a cuppa if we’re lucky! We’ll be asking about how things are in your neighbourhood and if you have any worries we’ll do our best to give you some advice or prevent them from happening ongoing.

While we are there we will offer to do a quick security survey of your house, checking locks and other methods of security that you may be missing. For those of you who are more vulnerable (over 60’s, single parents, those with a disability etc) we will arrange a visit from the West Herts Against Crime organisation who will fit any security that is needed for free. This has been very successful over the past weeks with many vulnerable people being given much needed free security.
If you are vulnerable or know of any friends or family that could do with a visit please contact either Tania or myself  and we will arrange a visit.

Our Operation Tarantula campaign is working very well. The number of cars that we come across that display valuables or leave satellite navigation tools on display has gone down considerably, greatly reducing the chance of would be thieves from smash and grab raids. Speaking of motor crime we are experiencing a spate of thefts of tyres and alloys from the newer and high end BMW cars. Please consider garaging your vehicle or try to park in such a manner as to make it difficult for them to access all four wheels.

On a personal note I am very pleased to be out and about in Chorleywood again after a long illness. I’ve really enjoyed meeting some old friends and made a few new ones in the past month. It’s lovely that most of you still remember me! Please feel free to stop myself or Tania when you see us to talk about any concerns you have or just to say hello.

Take care, Gareth.
